Adam Bacher
My recent photography comes from a month spent on assignment in Rwanda, in the fall of 2007, photographing the projects of the Itafari Foundation (www.itafari.org). Images and stories from the places I visited are documented on my blog site: www.bachersblog.com. This experience has refocused my attention, as I begin to plan my next trip to Africa in an effort to promote cultural awareness of the region. I'm currently raising funds for a project to go back to Rwanda to concentrate on photographing the country's genocide memorials, and to travel to Keyna to photograph an orphanage set up 10 years ago by a former peace corps worker from Oregon.
In December 2007, I become a board member of the Itafari Foundation, an organization dedicated to giving Rwandan's the opportunity for a better life and the ability to make it a reality. I've also begun an informal program with the public schools speaking to classes on my "day in a life" series with Rwandan school children (see www.bachersblog.com).
In my home town of Portland, Oregon, I've been a free-lance commercial photographer for the past fifteen years, doing location photography for businesses in the area. The majority of this work is for architectural, corporate, editorial, and public relations clients, and appears in a variety of print and electronic media. You can view it online at: www.adambacher.com.
My fine art photography takes place in the high mountain wilderness areas of the western United States. Most of the areas in these photographs are accessible only by many days of hiking. All are authentic. In the wilderness, immersed in the natural world, I'm inspired by the authenticity of a universe untouched by humanity. A place where life unfolds moment by moment and I become a participant in the vast spectacle around me. No digital manipulation or color filters are used. My goal with this body of work is to capture the landscapes as true and perfect as the experience of being there. This work can be viewed at: www.earthwatersky.com.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Adam moved to Oregon to attend graduate school in 1985. In 1987 he began his career in photography, and settled in the Portland area in 1991.
While specializing photographing people in their environment, Adam's photography is divided between corporate, commercial and editorial work. He says, " I have the best job in the world. What other profession allows you to see the inner workings of a clean room at a high tech manufacturer one day, photograph a mother with a new born in a birthing room the next day, and sit in on a power meeting of a venture capitalist a day later? Every shoot is an adventure."
