Shirley Gittelsohn 
As an artist who has spent 40 years exploring the nuances of light and color, Shirley Gittelsohn finds the sunlight, and subject matter in Mexico exhilarating. On her Manzanillo terrace, she sets up her studio, where the wild colors of bougainvilleas and philodendron leaves contrast with primitive, ancient clay pottery and figurines. Gittelsohn often composes her subjects against the dramatic backdrop of a blue/green sea and rocky outcrops.
Gittelsohn was born, raised and educated in Portland, Oregon. She attended Reed College, San Francisco State University, Portland State University, the Oregon Art Institute and the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts. Her painting career began when she enrolled in classes at the Museum Art School, now Pacific Northwest College of Art. Following those classes she began painting her children, their cousins and friends. When they grew bored to pose, she painted a number of large, expansive landscapes. Interest in her work grew, and she began to sell her work to friends and acquaintances who admired her loose, contemporary painting style and bold use of color. Gittelsohn's paintings can be seen in numerous public buildings, clubs, colleges, museums, universities, hotels and private collections too numerous to list.
