Janet Rothermel
Janet Rothermel was born in Bend, Oregon, in 1952. She grew up in Portland and attended Oregon State University where she studied fine art, later transferring to Portland State University where she received a degree in graphic design. She has worked locally as a freelance graphic designer, and has been employed at Freightliner Corporation as a technical illustrator, paint designer, and is currently a marketing manager for the remarketing division.
Rothermel's show at the Gottlieb Gallery features pastel paintings on Wallace's "sanded paper." It is created in a copyrighted process where cilica sand is bonded to archival paper. The pastel paint sticks she uses are pure pigment. Nothing dilutes or interferes with the color. She mixes her own colors and layers the pigment onto the sanded paper where it adheres. The result is an explosion of intense color derived from the pure pigments she uses in the process.
Rothermel has received the People's Choice Award, and several Honorable Mention Awards at the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts. Her work has been selected for use on cards and invitations by several local charitable organizations, including Loaves and Fishes and Providence Cancer Center.
